This is the second installment in Lee Jordan’s One Creepy Street series. In the first book the main character, Annica, learns of the dangers of texting while flying. In this second book Annica learns another important lesson: Be careful who you befriend on the Internet.Internet safety is a vital social issue for today’s children. Yet too many adults are either unaware of the potential dangers on the Web, or trust children to know and avoid these dangers. Therefore, a child’s Internet use may not be properly monitored by a responsible adult. This book is a must-have tool for opening a conversation with a child about Internet safety and practices.Spider on the Web presents a clever metaphor in which the reader is able to understand the potential danger of connecting with ‘this type of spider’, but Annica does not. Humor and playful rhyme invite the reader into the story and the action rises quickly. Fortunately, there is a safe resolution for Annica, but the author warns that continued diligence while on the Internet is necessary.As a teacher, I bought copies of this book for my classroom and our school library. As a grandparent, I bought copies for each of my grandchildren. This book belongs in every home that has a child and an Internet connection!

"The Spider on the Web" carries an important message of the dangers to the unaware while surfing the web. With more and more young people signing up for social media, message boards and surfing the web unsupervised the dangers as astronomical. This book tells young readers in an easy to understand way of the dangers and how to use caution when they are on the internet.Readers will be captivated by Rose's many colorful interpretations as they learn to keep themselves safe while browsing the web. Dangers lurk in unexpected places and "The Spider on the Web the reader how to avoid them.I received a copy of the Spider on the Web from NetGalley for review with a few technical problems that made sharing it with my niece and nephew difficult. That is the only reason I gave it a four star rating. I givethe print version a five. I felt the subject matter was important enough that I purchased the print copy to share with them. They loved it and Cameron even took it to share at show and tell at school last week. His teacher now has the book and is planning to use it to teach the class about being careful while her students are on the internet. This is a subject we cannot ignore and this book is a great way to approach the subject with our younger children.
I completely admire what this book is trying to do. As our children get on the internet at earlier ages all the time, we have to realize that we can't always be looking over their shoulder. They need to have some basic grounding in 'truths' about the Internet, which, unfortunately, includes the fact that you shouldn't trust people you meet on the Web. Books like this, which aim to put a concept very simply to young readers, are needed.However, there were a couple things that were off-putting. First - and the only direct criticism of the content of the book- there was a line in the book that talks about how the mother and police officer only found out what was going on through emails the young girl had forgotten to delete. Why would she delete her emails? Doesn't that infer that she knew what she was doing was wrong? Is that a thought we even want to put in young children's head? "Its okay, we can just hide it so no one knows we were talking." Now, if that was something that the Spider told Annica (which I could believe) that's fine, but it needs to be made more clear.Now, the illustrations were absolutely awesome. Brightly colored, they definitely capture and hold the attention. On the other hand, and here's my second thing that I'd change about the book, the font isn't a great choice. It doesn't stand out well against the background color its printed on, and while it might 'look nice' to some people, it can be a bit hard to read. I initially pulled this up on my phone and could barely read it. It could serve to be a bit darker and easier to focus on.Also, the rhymes were, at times, a bit of a stretch/ little awkward. It might seem like I'm nitpicking here, but truth is its easy to remember things that rhyme smoothly and simply. Trust me on this. My 6 year old can remember some ridiculous rhymes. If it flowed a bit smoother, it might be more of a 'fun' read altogether and encourage kids to come back and re-read it.Overall, though, a great message and fun illustrations combine to make this a book that many parents should consider getting for their kids.Disclaimer: Received a free copy from Netgalley for review consideration.
