The Human Advantage: A New Understanding of How Our Brain Became Remarkable (MIT Press)By Suzana Herculano-Houzel

Humans are awesome. Our brains are gigantic, seven times larger than they should be for the size of our bodies. The human brain uses 25% of all the energy the body requires each day. And it became enormous in a very short amount of time in evolution, allowing us to leave our cousins, the great apes, behind. So the human brain is special, right? Wrong, according to Suzana Herculano-Houzel. Humans have developed cognitive abilities that outstrip those of all other animals, but not because we are evolutionary outliers. The human brain was not singled out to become amazing in its own exclusive way, and it never stopped being a primate brain. If we are not an exception to the rules of evolution, then what is the source of the human advantage?

Herculano-Houzel shows that it is not the size of our brain that matters but the fact that we have more neurons in the cerebral cortex than any other animal, thanks to our ancestors' invention, some 1.5 million years ago, of a more efficient way to obtain calories: cooking. Because we are primates, ingesting more calories in less time made possible the rapid acquisition of a huge number of neurons in the still fairly small cerebral cortex -- the part of the brain responsible for finding patterns, reasoning, developing technology, and passing it on through culture.

Herculano-Houzel shows us how she came to these conclusions -- making "brain soup" to determine the number of neurons in the brain, for example, and bringing animal brains in a suitcase through customs. The Human Advantage is an engaging and original look at how we became remarkable without ever being special.

Review

Elephants have bigger brains than humans. So why are we more intelligent? Suzana Herculano-Houzel tells how her ability to count neurons gives us a radical new understanding of brain biology. Her science is convincing, fun, and inspiring. The Human Advantage is a game-changer.

(Richard Wrangham, author of Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human)

In this highly readable and entertaining book, Herculano-Houzel summarizes her unique and important body of work. Her numerous discoveries regarding the number of neurons in animal and human brains lead her to conclude that human brains are fairly typical primate brains, though they are unusually large. As fascinating as the science is her vivid account of both her research adventures and her challenges.

(Georg Striedter, Professor of Neurobiology and Behavior, University of California, Irvine; author of Principles of Brain Evolution and Neurobiology: A Functional Approach)

Beginning 1.5 million years ago with Homo erectus, Suzana Herculano-Houzel convincingly concludes that the human brain, a primate brain, owes its cognitive abilities to the number of neurons in the cerebral cortex. Engagingly and accessibly, she expands upon Wrangham's and Aiello's hypotheses that the brain was 'fed' by calories from cooked foods.

(Frances Burton, Professor Emerita, Department of Anthropology, University of Toronto; author of Fire: The Spark that Ignited Human Evolution)

Clinical Blues is a moveable feast of ideas, recollections, aspirations and apparitions of desire in the collective but submerged consciousness of the new Africa. Dami Ajayi, on the basis of this collection follows in a great tradition of medical doctors who were writers, and is also able to catch the inflections of Anglo-American modernisms – his poems resonate with Eliot’s arch wit and startling images and phrasing. At times lyrical, at times satirical, this is poetry of vision, humanity, and genuine literary value. Lines and observations lift free of essays on housewives, on God, on love, on the medical clinic. This is a book everyone interested in emerging African voices should own. “Dami Ajayi, on the basis of this collection, is surely one of the key Nigerian poets of his generation. He follows in a great tradition of medical doctors who were writers, and is also able to catch the inflections of Anglo-American modernisms - his poems resonate with Eliot's arch wit and startling images and phrasing. At times lyrical, at times satirical, this is poetry of vision, humanity, and genuine literary value. Lines and observations lift free of essays on housewives, on God, on love, on the medical clinic. In exploring love through the lens of tropes of illness, the poet wields a clever, original scalpel to earlier traditions. He is a poet of promise, and while not every poem here is the equal of the masterful title poem, this is still a book everyone interested in emerging African voices should own.” - Todd Swift, British-Canadian Poet “Ajayi effectively works the unity of his two disciplines into his writing, deploying metaphors sometimes as stethoscopes or scalpels. An exciting new poet to watch and support.” -Afam Akeh, Author of Letter Home and Biafran Nights “Clinical Blues is part Jazz, part Highlife, part Afrobeat.” -Niran Okewole, Author of Logarhythms “Dami Ajayi is a poet.” -Jumoke Verissimo, Author of I Am Memory “The poetry that defines a generation is made in the thick of things. Dami Ajayi presents the world with the very essence of his generation. It is a moveable feast of ideas, recollections, aspirations and apparitions of desire in the collective but submerged consciousness of the new Africa. Ajayi has written the sine qua non of his times as Fela Kuti sang of his own.” - Tade Ipadeola, Author of The Sahara Testaments and President, PEN Nigeria Centre. “A crisp new voice with an old soul. Dami Ajayi's poetry enchants.” -Lola Shoneyin, Author of The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives “Beware of poets who moonlight as Medical Doctors. It’s a terrible mix, there is ample evidence to that effect if you engage Dami Ajayi in conversation. He employs strange metaphors in describing the human anatomy, assumes society can be put in a test-tube and analyzed, and he’s a hopeless romantic. Thankfully though, it is a terrible mix that produces a fantastic cocktail of poetry. Dami Ajayi’s debut runs the risk of being labelled a classic.” -Ayodele Arigbabu, winner of the 2001 Liberty Bank Prize for Short Stories

Why Johnny Doesn't Flap: NT is OK!By Clay Morton, Gail Morton

Johnny is different. He is never exactly on time, he can't seem to stick to a routine and he often speaks in cryptic idioms. Johnny is neurotypical, but that's OK.

A picture book with a difference, Why Johnny Doesn't Flap turns the tables on common depictions of neurological difference by drolly revealing how people who are not on the autistic spectrum are perceived by those who are. The autistic narrator's bafflement at his neurotypical friend's quirks shows that 'normal' is simply a matter of perspective.

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 3—Books about disability are often told from the point of view of those without disabilities. By turning this traditional framing and structure on its head, the authors emphasize that differences can be subjective. The narrator, who has autism, matter-of-factly outlines the ways that his friend Johnny, who is neurotypical (NT), seems strange. For instance, Johnny looks right into people's eyes when talking to them and doesn't have meltdowns when faced with a change in schedule. Ultimately, the main character appreciates that being different isn't wrong, which helps him connect with his pal. The typed-style text and realistic, muted illustrations initially seem flat. However, considering the audience—those with autism who are learning about the behaviors of neurotypically developing peers—the design makes sense. The visuals paint the world as the protagonist sees it and are realistic in execution. The book has a minor flaw: the abbreviation of NT in the subtitle could be confusing. VERDICT It will take extra work for librarians to get this offering in the hands of the right readers, but its unique perspective and important message make it a worthwhile purchase.—Renee Grassi, Glen Ellyn Public Library, Glen Ellyn, IL

Review
A delightful departure from the norm, Why Johnny Doesn't Flap flips the script and models empathy, acceptance, and compassion for that oddest of neurologies, the neurotypical. This irreverent subversion is a breath of fresh air, and reminds us that there's not a right way to have a brain, and that 'normal' is in the eye of the beholder. We're better off with a dose of the Mortons' wry perspective. -- Julia Bascom, author, The Obsessive Joy of Autism The young narrator of this charming book helps readers understand why a neurotypical peer's behavior can be so confusing. Fun illustrations support the text, providing extra opportunities for discussion exploring the differences between NT and ASD behaviors, and that's more than OK. That's super duper! -- Liane Holliday Willey, author of Pretending to be Normal, Asperger Syndrome in Adolescents, and Asperger Syndrome in the Family A young narrator explains that his neurotypical friend is OK, even though he sometimes plays games out of order and doesn't flap his hands to express emotions. It's a neat bit of role reversal. It's really OK that Johnny arrives for playdates a few minutes late or early ("hopeless when it comes to punctuality"), that his gaze is direct, that he really doesn't seem interested in knowing everything about hydraulic forklifts, wants to play with other kids ("Maybe he's a little too obsessed with social interaction"), and never has a meltdown when there's a fire drill at school. "Mom says that everyone's brain is different, and different isn't always wrong." A closing note for parents offers further bids for acceptance: "as many as 67 in 68 children may be neurotypical. So if your child does not currently have an NT kid in their life, they almost certainly will." Merry's stripped-down, neatly drawn generic views of dewy-eyed figures with fixed, tight-lipped smiles neither give the characters any individuality nor do the premise's ingenuity much service, though they are doubtless calculated to make it easy for the book's autistic readers to decode. It looks bland at first, but it's a clever perspective changer for NT children as well as a rare chance for young readers with autism to see themselves as a point-of-view character. (Picture book. 6-8) Kirkus Reviews An unnamed boy with autism describes his friend Johnny's unusual and sometimes perplexing behaviors: "Mom says it is because he is NT, or neurotypical. He doesn't have autism, so his brain works differently from mine, but that's ok." Johnny doesn't arrive precisely on time to visit, makes direct eye contact, "doesn't have a topic he knows everything about, like World War II or dinosaurs or forklifts," and "always wants to play with other kids." Merry's artwork is somewhat rudimentary (the boys' facial expressions scarcely change, even when the narrator is having a "meltdown," and there isn't much variation in the staging of the images). But the authors' subversion of expectations through the narration is effective and thought-provoking, and may well lead neurotypical readers to reconsider their own behaviors and judgments. Ages 5-9. (Oct.) Publishers Weekly
