The purpose of this book is to show how to process sound with the JavaTM programming language using techniques of digital signal processing (DSP). This is not a traditional DSP book (or Java book for that matter), in that only a limited amount of theory is presented. The approach taken here is much more intuitive, describing how algorithms work instead of necessarily why they work mathematically. Here, hearing is truly believing. You don't need an advanced degree in mathematics or digital signal processing to understand what is going on. You should come away with a toolkit of audio processing tools and effects that can be applied anywhere they are needed. To this end, the book includes code for processing digital audio in various ways (reverb, phaser, delay, equalization, flanger, chorus, etc); for analyzing digital audio (an oscilloscope class and a spectrum analyzer class); a large group of User Interface (UI) controls (potentiometers, LED-like indicators, switches, meters, etc) for building audio processing devices in software, complete with realistic front panels and two full applications (phrase sampler and guitar tuner) for showing practical uses of the code provided.

As anyone interested in audio will know, digital processing of audio is all the rage and is one of the reasons for the falling prices of professional audio equipment. The increase in microprocessor performance over time and falling memory prices has benefitted the recording industry as well as the personal computing industry. Previously, digital audio processing algorithms could only be implemented on dedicated DSP chips because of performance requirements. Now, these same algorithms can be implemented on a personal computer using an interpretive language like Sun's Java. With processing performance doubling roughly every six months, even the lowest-end computer will have or currently does have the power required for manipulation of sound in real time.

In short, this book provides a collection of algorithms for audio processing that I have collected over many years. These algorithms are coded in Java so you can see as well as hear the affect of their application. This book contains a lot of code you can use for whatever audio applications you can envision. Audio files are also provided to audibly illustrate the processing algorithms.Who the book is written for

This book is for anyone with a programming background who is interested in the manipulation of sound on a PC and people who are interested in how programs like Cakewalk or Cool Edit process digital audio. This book is also for anyone who would like a platform for prototyping new audio effects to hear what they sound like. This book is even for someone who would like to make their voice sound like Darth Vader or the Chipmunks on their answering machine (using the pitch shifter effect provided).

Besides the intended use in audio applications, the UI controls and indicators provided in this book can be used for process control and other test applications where values must be displayed to a user and the user has a need to interact with simulated controls on simulated equipment front panels—for example, power system monitors, power plant simulators, mass transit status controls, etc.Why Java?

The primary reason for choosing Java is because it is my programming language of choice for application development. Ease of use, object orientation, and portability make it an excellent choice for coding audio algorithms for reuse. Further, since VM (virtual machine) performance is increasing rapidly, Java's performance is approaching that of C++. So by using Java we get portability, the performance we need, and the richness of the Java APIs without the complexity of C++. That's a winning combination as far as I am concerned. I never want to code in C++ again if I can help it.

Almost all of the code in this book is written in Java. I say almost because there is a small amount of code for interfacing to the Windows audio hardware. This was necessary since the initial version of JMF (Java Media Framework) did not provide audio (or video) acquisition when the code for this book was first written. So, I provide a couple of Windows DLLs written in C using JNI (Java native interface) to couple the Windows sound hardware to the Java framework presented in this book. By the time you read this, the need for this system-dependent code will probably have vanished as the next release of JMF/JavaSound promises to provide audio acquisition. See Appendix B for details.

While almost all of the code in this book is written in Java, this book does not pretend or intend to teach Java programming. There are many, many books on the market for that. No one with experience with any high level procedural language should have trouble reading the code provided as it is well-commented and most of the code has javadoc API documentation as well. All of the code is written in a very straightforward manner with no intentional tricks or obfuscations. I want people to understand what I have provided and use it fully.

One final note is that all programs in this book are written as Java applications. There are no applets provided. Using the framework I provide, it should be an easy task to come up with a Java applet for processing sound but I'll leave it to you to do so. Any Java programming book can be used as a guide for applet development.What you need to use the software in this book

You'll need the software provided on the included CDROM, a Java development environment of your choice (the code is Java 1.1 compliant), a make utility of some kind, and a PC with enough horsepower to process audio. Minimum requirements for the PC are a Pentium-class machine with a minimum of 20 megabytes of RAM running at 150MHz or faster. Of course the faster the PC, the higher the sampling rate audio that can be accommodated. Actually, even a slower machine will do, but you'll have to limit your real-time processing to lower sampling rates. My main development machine was a 75MHz Pentium laptop that worked fine except when high sampling rate audio (44100 samples/second) was processed. Also, it will be helpful to have a sound card on your PC that is full duplex. That is, one that can record and play back at the same time. Otherwise, you will not be able to digitize audio and play back audio simultaneously. Fortunately, most modern sound cards support full duplex operation if the required driver is available, so this should not be an issue for most people.

A final note about the software build environment and testing: This code was built and tested on machines running Windows. Ports of the provided code to other platforms will require some work on the user's part that is not within the scope of this book. Make files will probably need to be changed when using different make programs and even some of the Java code may need to be tweaked depending on the Java development environment and version of Java you use. Please be prepared to face these and similar situations as you attempt to use the code provided.Who the author is

I have been writing software for a very long time. Recently, I was a founding partner in a startup company that writes multimedia software. I've always been interested in sound and imaging. Actually, the last three books I have written deal with imaging topics.

Before starting my software career, I was involved in the design, production, and deployment of professional recording equipment as a hardware circuit designer. I have now come full circle with this book. It is rather amazing to me to think that what I designed years ago with analog circuitry can now be done totally in the digital domain with software. When I think of all the circuit boards I designed that are now unnecessary, I have to chuckle.

I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I have enjoyed writing it. There is something very pleasing about having knobs to tweak (even though they are simulated knobs on simulated front panels) and hearing the results of the changes in real time.

Carmen Pereira-Muro is Associate Professor of Spanish at Texas Tech University. Previously she served as Assistant Professor of Spanish Language and Literature at the University of Miami and Assistant Professor of Spanish Language and Literature at Albion College. Her literature and culture research interests include 18th- and 19th-century studies with a focus on questions of gender and nationalism, Spanish Realist Novel, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Transatlantic Studies, Galician Studies, and Poetry. Honored with the 2010 Texas Tech President's Excellence in Teaching Award, Dr. Pereira-Muro is a referee for LETRAS FEMENINAS and a referee and member of the editorial board for CÉFIRO. She earned her B.A. from the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela in Spain and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

So, when I enter my celebrity homes for the first time, I tell them nine times out of ten I can damn sure guarantee I haven’t seen or heard their work. And all of them, from Matt Damon to Justin Timberlake, give me the same gut laugh in response to my honesty. I’ve cared for more than 270 families and worked in the homes of celebrities, CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, Young Presidents’ Organization members, congressmen, foreign dignitaries, the owner of Ruby Tuesdays, the former CEO of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the Collier Family who saw the beauty of the Everglades and developed Collier County, and even the granddaughter of the inventor of the lava lamp. Let me tell you, if I could have dug a hole from Dallas to Mobile, I would’ve! Catherine was one of those moms who taught me I shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. She put me in my place and helped me understand that all parents are just that, PARENTS, and the outside world does not matter. For more than three decades, I have been teaching parents just like you the basics for their newborns. I have been in the trenches with them all, from parents who barely had a roof over their heads to parents gracing the covers of magazines. My focus while working with all of these families is not only about making sure their babies thrive, but also that the parents succeed as well. IT TAKES A VILLAGE I am a proud product of the Deep South. There, I was taught the importance of manners and learned the values of knowledge, wisdom, compassion, love, and patience in abundance. Nurturing is something that was instilled in me through my family and Southern heritage. I was taught this just as I was taught to prepare dinner or say my prayers or do my daily chores. These values have made me the baby nurse I am today. I grew up surrounded by the love of a large extended family who instilled a strong work ethic in me and taught me it takes a village to raise a child. Nurturing is in my DNA—from my mother, Aliece Simpson, and my father, David Simpson’s, great-grandmother, Grandma Hannah. Grandma Hannah was a larger-than-life figure, dressed in her white knee-high stockings and hand-sewn dresses, her hair neatly tucked under a white turban. Her story, passed down through the generations, is that prior to coming to America, she was a house slave on the plantations in Africa, where she bore an unknown number of children. As were the standards in those times, slaves were viewed as nothing more than property to be separated with no regard to their families. Although presumably still in her twenties, she was considered past childbearing age and was sent to America. She would eventually come to know freedom in the United States and bear twelve more children. For the first time in her life, she did not have to dream of who her children would grow up to be. Living as a sharecropper, Grandma Hannah became a highly accomplished and nurturing midwife in her community of Deer Park, Alabama. Although I would never have the chance to meet her, as a young child taking trips with my grandmother to visit our family who still lived on Grandma Hannah’s homestead, I would quietly play on the porch and listen to the stories they told, not knowing that our paths would one day be so intertwined. My mother was graceful, compassionate, patient, and, most of all, a woman of God. She exuded the pure essence of love and saw no wrong in any human. All of those qualities translated into her role as a nurse. She was one of the first African American aides to be waivered in as a practical nurse in Mobile, Alabama. She tutored under the watchful eyes of the Sisters of Mercy at Mobile’s African American hospital, St. Martin de Porres, and then worked as an LPN under one of the few African American physicians making house calls, before eventually moving to private-duty nursing. I would go along with her on some of those follow-up house calls and sit in the living room, waiting for her to finish up with her patients. She would bring out the best in everyone she came into contact with. You see, she had the most loving parents in Gladys and Tom Smith, even with them caring for all their eight kids. Without hesitation, my grandparents would give to others, be it children or families in the neighborhood. Their door was always open to someone in need. As for me, after attending Mississippi University for Women, Mobile College, and Southern University in Baton Rouge, where I majored in early childhood education, I interrupted my studies to take care of my young daughter, Courtney, and then returned to school for further training in the Montessori Method. My career took many turns: I worked as a public-school substitute teacher, a grocery store baker, a public-school cafeteria employee, a summer lunch program organizer, and a small gumbo shop owner. Eventually, I stepped out on the limb of faith with a woman I loved and respected, my cousin Ileaner Gipson Randall, affectionately known as Mu. She was more than just my cousin—she was everyone’s mother. Like my mom, Mu was a woman of God who conveyed the pure essence of love, a nurturer who could take you at your worst and restore your soul. She instilled the importance of family pride, respect, and generosity not only in her children and grandchildren, but also in any and all she came into contact with. She gave me the confidence to shift gears. After teaching at a local preschool, I began working as a baby nurse for two professional parents from a prominent family in Mobile who desperately needed help raising their newborn. I soon found myself in great demand as a local baby nurse. Mu had reminded me that before certifications and degrees were available to African American women during slavery, and even as late as the 1960s, the word nurse meant “nurse back to health,” not the clinical term we use today. I grew up surrounded by nurses and their loving wisdom, and I am honored to use that word to describe what I do. My world of baby nursing took me from Huntsville, Alabama, to Dallas, Texas, to Washington, DC, to Hollywood, and no matter where I traveled, all parents had the same issues and faced the same hurdles—from setting a daily routine and trying to get their little ones to eat on a decent schedule to juggling their own personal and professional obligations while never seeming to get enough sleep. I always tell my families I will give them all of the knowledge I have so we can get through the next three to six months together, because they can handle it. My families eventually learn that this larger-than-life woman living in their homes doesn’t want anything more than to build a firm foundation for them and their new baby. It’s absolutely essential to pour a foundation that will become as sturdy and durable as your love for your baby. It’s what you will build upon for the next eighteen years . . . and it’s the first step to making your baby happy and healthy—and becoming an even happier and more resilient parent who can face whatever life throws your way. Because every baby is unique and you’re going to be learning on the job, I want you to know that everything is going be okay. Believe me, your baby is a lot stronger and smarter than you are. You can and will learn what to do. HOW TO USE THIS BOOK This book is divided into four parts to make it as easy as possible to find the information you need. Part One gives you the essential, reassuring information you should know before the baby arrives. I’ll tell you what items you do (and don’t) need for baby care, who to hire and what to ask, how to arrange your schedule, and what to check off your pre-birth checklist so you’ll be as prepared as possible once the baby arrives. In Part Two, I’ll tell you what to expect in the delivery room and in the immediate after-glow of your baby’s birth. This book left me really conflicted. If this book had been written 10 plus years ago I would be advocating it for all parents. My problem is that there is advice in this book that goes against current AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) guidelines. Just one example is pulling back the foreskin to clean an uncircumcised infant. This was best practice in the past, but we’ve now learned that it isn’t best and it’s recommended you NEVER pull pack the foreskin. There were multiple instances where her information was right at one point, but doesn’t meet current guidelines. On the other hand there is AMAZING advice on dealing with the emotions a new baby brings.My advice is too go ahead and read the book, but to double check anything related to the health and safety of your infant before proceeding. Take her own advice from her section “Dealing with Advice” and comb through this book taking the good parts(because there are some great ones) and just forget the rest (because there also parts that need to be).

I hate to write a negative review because I like Nanny Connie and was looking forward to this book, but it left me disappointed. It is a short easy read, I read it in a day.There is some decent tips in here but none of the good advice is anything you haven’t already heard. For example, start a night time routine early, pacifiers calm baby, gas drops reduce tummy issues. All very obvious tips. I felt there was way too many stories in here about celebrities. I don’t care about them.There was also a section on choosing a nanny. I think most people buying this book are doing so because they can’t afford a nanny, so that information was useless.Some statements in the book bothered me, like “formula is more nutritious than breast milk so..” . Actually, no it isn’t. Formula is fine if you need to use it, I’m not shaming anyone, but this is a false statement to make in a book. I found information on breastfeeding lacking in general. I bought the kindle version which does not have the AR ability of the hard copy. Lastly, this book is completely her on personal ideas and no research or citations are given just so you know.Overall, it’s not terrible or advertly dangerous recommendations but the book is ok at best, but not worth the money or read. I’d recommend just going to the library or reading information available online over purchasing this book.

I read this book in a couple of sittings. I’ve heard Nanny Connie speak via Instagram so when I read the book, I heard it in her voice. I quote her so much that my husband is starting to get annoyed. But really he’s listened to me when I read sections of her book and took her advice to heart, i.e. burping techniques, breastfeeding, and pacifier usage (I’m pro and he’s against). All in all it’s a wonderful book and I learned a lot.

I found this book to be both helpful and entertaining. Some baby books have too much information and it's an info overload where I'll never remember everything. I appreciated the approach and structure she used for the book. I could have done without the section on hiring a night nurse (one of the reasons I bought the book is because we couldn't afford one) and probably could have done without so many celebrity commentaries, but overall I appreciated her insight and am glad she shared it in this book!

Take this book's advice with a grain of salt. there are a lot of things she says in here that your OB would tell you do not do and there are a lot of things in here that your OB will say def do. its just another opinion in the long line of opinions on how to raise your baby. the celebrity piece gets annoying and redundant. but you can skip past it. prob would not buy this for a friend.

I absolutely loved this book. As a first time mom, there were so many useful tips I would have never known without this read. I feel like I adjusted better to parenthood because of this book and had a happier baby too! My husband is thankful for her useful tips too! They may be seasoned advice and tips, but for this momma - it was worth every penny buying this book! As for a previous reviewer stated that you shouldn’t pull back the fore skin to clean anymore - my doctor says you should! So her advice may be sound for the kids and doctors she has dealt with!

As a RN labor and delivery/newborn nursery nurse and mother I HIGHLY encourage all new mamas and seasoned to read this book.

This book is a great resource for parents. It would make a great shower gift. Nanny Connie has a great sense of humor which makes for a fun and enjoyable read. Her compassion for not only babies, but mom's too is evident on every page and makes you feel as though she really is talking to you.
